A cellar door with a difference this week. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit Qualia, on Hamilton Island, after I’d finished filming up that way. It’s been a crazy two years for everybody, but, on the plus side, we’ve had the opportunity to explore this incredible country.
We really do live in the most beautiful country in the world with some of the most exceptional wines.
While I was at Qualia, I met a superb sommelier by the name of Ben Cabangun. Ben runs a series of Talk and Taste experiences for guests that are incredibly informative and a hell of a lot of fun.
They give you an insight into how to perfectly pair your sake with sushi, Champagne with oysters, and wine with cheese. I highly recommend, if you do have the chance to get to Hamilton Island, that you track him down for one of his courses. It will change the way you think about your food and wine combos.
Ben put on a special Robert Oatley wine tasting, which is appropriate given the family’s connection with Hamilton Island. Most of Oatley’s grapes are sourced from key regions around the country, like Margaret River and McLaren Vale, and its director of winemaking is the award-winning Larry Cherubino.
All that makes for pretty delicious drops of plonk and, overlooking the crystal-clear waters of the Whitsunday Islands, hard not to enjoy.
