Best cities for sleep: Canberra, Australia ranked number one by Lenstore

Before we start this story, please know that we love the ACT and Canberra in particular. It has long shed its frankly undeserved reputation for functional dowdiness and now thrums with culture, food, bars and – dare we say it – fun!

That noted, when you assess a potential travel destination, what are the thoughts that spring to mind? Maybe it’s beaches. Maybe it’s nightlife. Maybe it’s shopping. Maybe it’s culture. Maybe it’s somewhere where the Australian accent is deemed irresistibly attractive.

But have you ever asked, what’s the quality of sleep like over there? Apparently, it’s a thing. So much so that analysed 36 capital cities around the world to determine which locations provided the best and worst environments for a good night’s rest. Among the criteria were noise levels, light pollution, air quality, climate, and how many hours the average resident works per week.

Coming in top of the list with a solid 40 winks – winks surely the metric they should have gone with – was the Australian capital. We were top of the list when it came to a lack of noise and light pollution – “The ACT! It’s dark and quiet” – and only Bern in Switzerland beat us for air quality.

Vienna came in second on the sleep-friendly city list.

Below, you’ll find the top 10 cities for some quality shut-eye – ‘c’mon down Vilnius’ – and because they are nothing if not thorough, the team at also listed the worst cities for snoozing. So if you’re going to Washington DC or Santiago, you may want to pack an eye mask and some ear plugs.

Can you keep it down please Washington?
