Australia’s most epic fishing tours

Now, with lockdowns and border closures behind us, it’s the ideal time to put our fishing skills – and gear – to use a bit further afield.

The rewards of a fishing trip are more than reeling in a catch – it can also mean precious time spent with family or friends in some of Australia’s most spectacular locations.

Top End, NT

Whichever way you look at it, a Territory fishing trip is an enriching experience. You could come home $1 million better off thanks to the Million Dollar Fish competition (registrations are open now). At the very least, you’ll get world-class fishing in some of Australia’s most beautiful, remote locations. For the ultimate luxury fishing experience, Airborne Solutions runs heli-fishing day trips that visit secluded Top End fishing spots and can even be combined with a heli-pub crawl, dropping into Goat Island Lodge, Darwin River Tavern, and Crab Claw Island Resort.

Ashmore Reef, Qld

If you want to push the limits on your fishing trip, Ashmore Reef at the extreme edge of the Great Barrier Reef is the destination to try. Not only does it involve traveling to the outer reaches of Australian waters (go any further and you’ll hit PNG), a trip here promises to stretch your gear, stamina, and skill with species such as giant trevally, yellowfin, and dogtooth tuna that can top 100kg. All while surrounded by dazzling coral cays and Maldives-esque islands. Port Douglas-based East Coast Angling offers eight-day Ashmore Reef tours aboard its luxury 80-foot mothership.

Abrolhos Islands, WA

A marine wonderland about 60km off Geraldton, the Abrolhos comprises 122 islands, with the fishing described as out of this world. Thanks to its remote reef location, the array of species on offer ranges “from mud crabs to marlin and everything in between”. As good as the fishing is, though, a visit to the Abrolhos isn’t all about the fish. Blue Lightning Fishing Charters operates liveaboard charters from Geraldton, where keen fishos can pepper their days with top-class surfing, snorkeling, diving or bird-watching when not casting a line.

Kangaroo Island, SA

Not only is KI beloved for its terrestrial animals, but the surrounding marine wildlife is also superb, too – and that extends to the huge variety of fish on the menu. A day trip or overnighter with Kangaroo Island Fishing Adventures comes with a guarantee you’ll catch fish, with gummy and school shark, kingfish, flathead, and King George whiting among the offering. For extra convenience when you arrive on shore ready for a cook-up, the company also offers island accommodation in comfortable cabins, close to the beach and private marina at Western River.
