Adelaide named in world’s best destinations for 2022 by National Geographic Traveller

For years it’s been overlooked and even ridiculed by its interstate rivals, but now the whole world is singing Adelaide’s praises.

Adelaide has been named one of the world’s top destinations for 2022 in the latest National Geographic Traveller hot list, one of only two Australian destinations to rate a mention.

The travel magazine lists Adelaide among its top six sustainable destinations, with the city’s bid to become the world’s second National Park City putting it squarely in the spotlight.

“South Australia’s cosmopolitan, coastal capital is working to become cooler, greener, wilder, and more climate-resilient through rewilding projects,” the listing says, citing the state’s initiatives to support butterfly species, platypus, and tree planting.

It’s the latest in a series of accolades for Adelaide, which was named the world’s third most liveable city for 2021 as well as the world’s third most honest city.

Elsewhere in Australia, National Geographic Traveller also names Victoria among its hot list of places to discover nature in 2022, thanks to a new Great Ocean Road wildlife sanctuary.

Set in Otway’s bushland and opened in the wake of the 2019-20 bushfires, Wildlife Wonders is home to koalas, wallabies, and bandicoots, and is the brainchild of Brian Massey – the landscape designer of New Zealand’s Hobbiton experience.

The two Australian destinations are among 35 global hot spots for 2022 named in the National Geographic Traveller list, which covers the categories of sustainability, nature, adventure, culture, and history, and family.
