After undergoing renovations, what was originally a guesthouse for fishermen has been restored and recreated into a luxury guesthouse. Owned by the luxury hotel group, Belmond, the revitalised Splendido Mare reopened in April 2021 to reveal opulent rooms and breathtaking harbour views. Nestled within Portofino’s cliffside speckled with coloured buildings, Belmond Splendido Mare promises luxury travellers a heavenly slice of ‘la dolce vita.’
Located within the main Piazzetta, Splendido Mare offers an authentic Portofino travel experience while remaining markedly luxurious and exclusive. Boasting incredible views of the glittering coast, al fresco dining, an ice cream parlour, complimentary sailing trips out in the wooden gozzo and access to Bagni Fiore beach, Splendido Mare has all the ingredients for the perfect holiday on the Italian Riviera.
As for where lucky travellers will rest their heads at night, Splendido Mare’s 14 rooms and suites have been tastefully decorated by the Parisian design team, Festen, to create an opulent and authentically Italian experience. Paying tribute to the guesthouse’s history, Splendido Mare also has a suite named after iconic Hollywood actress, Ava Gardner, who actually stayed in the old Portofino guesthouse while filming The Barefoot Contessa in the 50s. While room prices vary, the Ava Gardner suite and its impeccable views will cost you around A$5,900 per night. On the other end of the spectrum, a Double Village View room at Splendido Mare costs around A$2,500 a night, depending on booking dates.
Courtesy shuttles can also take you to Splendido Mare’s sister property, Hotel Splendido, where guests can take a dip in the heated swimming pool and take in beautiful views of Portofino from the hillside.
In addition to reviving Splendido Mare into the opulent jewel, it is today, LVMH-owned Belmond has also revived Portofino’s famed Primavera boat races. In honour of the completed refurbishment of Splendido Mare, Portofino welcomed the return of regatta racing with the ‘Regate di Primavera-Splendido Mare Cup‘ on May 6 2021, which saw a fleet of 60-foot boats and a number of incredible yachts sail to Portofino’s waters.
Already solidifying itself as the future luxury accommodation of choice for the elite, Splendido Mare is the first hotel to be revitalised by Belmond since it joined luxury conglomerate, LVMH Group in 2019. As of 2021, Belmond owns 34 luxury hotels across the world.
