5 secrets to see the best of Vivid Sydney

The Harbour City will turn on with light displays, shows, talks, music and food in 11 different precincts. Here’s how to navigate the event (May 27 to June 18):

1. Go on a weeknight

Avoid the weekends to avoid the crowds. Earlier in the week will see fewer crushes. But if you venture in on the weekend, go later in the night – from 9 pm rather than at prime family times from 6 pm to 8 pm. Lights are on till 11 pm.

2. Look beyond the CBD

Circular Quay, Barangaroo and the CBD make up the hub, but sites at Central Station, Taronga Zoo, Chatswood, Luna Park, Carriageworks and Darling Harbour are well worth visiting.

3. Score big discounts on ticketed events

NSW residents can use their Discover or Parent NSW vouchers at paid events like Wild Lights at Taronga Zoo, the live performances or the Vivid Talks events.

4. Don’t miss the free stuff

Vivid’s most popular displays are free. The Lighting of the Sails on the Opera House is from 6 pm – 11 pm nightly. The First Light display on the Harbour Bridge pylon honours the Gadigal people with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony on May 27. At Central Station, Vivid Reflections is an interactive display on the clock tower. And the Light Walk sees more than 50 installations on an 8km path from the harbour to Central Station.

5. Stay downtown and save

Food and accommodation providers are luring crowds with deals and packages. Oaks has the Bright Lights Sydney Sale with 30 per cent off when you stay two nights or more during Vivid. See the lights up close from Pier One Sydney Harbour with a two-night package from $999 for two that includes breakfast and a $100 dining voucher. Take a half-price two-hour Harbourside Cruise (down from $99 to $49 a person) including finger food and a welcome drink. Or grab a gourmet picnic pack from the Harbour View Hotel which includes four alcoholic drinks, food and a blanket, for $95 for two.
